How The Trust Began
In 1978 individual Local Authorities took over responsibility for arranging adoptions and the National Children Adoption Association (NCAA) ceased to exist. All the NCAA's leftover funds, mainly from donations and covenants, were then used to form the basis of the Trust.
Princess Alice, the Countess of Athlone and grand-daughter of Queen Victoria, was a friend of Miss Clara Andrew, the founder and Director of the NCAA. The Princess's long-standing interest in the organisation resulted in her becoming Chairman of both the Finance Committee and the Case Committee. When the dissolution of the NCAA led to the formation of the Trust she graciously allowed it to use her married name and thus The Athlone Trust was born.
